Episode 81: B3 Breaks: Crafting Your Personal Purpose Statement
Have you ever thought about your purpose in life? Amy Vetter invites you to take some time and create a personal purpose statement that will align to your decisions as you move forward to the value you want to create in the world. This does not necessarily have to be related to your job or your title. This value is what you want to experience in life and what you want others to experience as well. You can also treat this value as what your answer would be when someone asks you who you are. Amy wants you to remember that a lot of times we are defined by our accomplishments instead of the value we want to turn out in this world. Take a step back, reflect and think about this as a guidance on how you can create the outcome from the purpose that you will work for every day.

B3 Breaks: Crafting Your Personal Purpose Statement
Welcome to the show where anything can be possible because when you believe you can, you will. This series is all about getting honest with ourselves and noticing the things that we carry with us. We each have our own life experiences to go from. Sometimes it’s hard to truly understand what it’s like to be someone else. What we can do to create change is to start with us. If each of us took one action each day in our own lives, we can collectively change the world around us. What does it take? It takes work and practice.
We have to be honest with ourselves as we get there. To do that, we have these B3 Breaks in order to pause and assess our thoughts before we speak to take an honest look at our interactions in our day and the energy that we may be creating around us. We ask other people questions and learn their stories and experiences. We create positive energy with the people around us and find peaceful ways to show our support to our friends, family and acquaintances. We observe all of this without judgment. We are present with the people we are with and we show up in love. What can we do? We start with the little things. This series is all about short practices that you can put into your day. Practice this each day for 2, 5 or 10 minutes, whatever it takes, so that you can observe your energy and be intentional with the energy you create around you. If you believe you can, you will. The show begins now.

For B3 Break, we're going to talk about designing our purpose statement, especially in times like these. We can feel out of control and lose our sense of who we are because everything is changing. Maybe our business, our career and how we do our work are changing. When we haven’t crafted our personal purpose statement, then things can feel out of control and we may feel not as well about ourselves than we usually do.
Taking some time to do this personal purpose statement can help you make sure that you're aligning your decisions as you go forward to the value that you want to create in the world. This isn't about your title and your expertise. This is about the passion and purpose that you want to create for the world around you and yourself. It's a simple formula. The first part of the formula is brainstorming the value that you want to create for yourself and the people around you. You add that to who you are creating that value for in order to create the outcome or that personal purpose statement, that you will align your goals and all the other decisions that you want to make as well.
I’ll use myself as an example. I grew up with things like this happening in my life because I’ve lived through the recession before in the construction industry going down. That affected my family and the businesses of my family. When that happened, I started creating that personal purpose statement for myself. The value that I want to create for other business owners and people is never to experience that kind of loss again. The value I create is making sure that anything that I do is helping people to be able to thrive and help the people around them thrive as well. In my career and my life, that has pivoted a number of times of what that meant with the things that I do. As long as that’s aligned with my personal purpose statement, then I know that I'm living the kind of value that I want to create in the world.
Doing this is important at this time because a lot of times, when we ask, "Who are you?" we define ourselves by our titles and by our accomplishments, rather than the value that we want to create in the world. Taking some time to do that will help you in making small decisions or noticing that even though life is changing and things that you are doing are different from how you did it last month or the month before, you are still aligning with the value that you want to create in the world. It may look a little different, but the overall mission, passion and purpose behind why you do what you do are still there. It can give you that sense of gratitude and energize you to make sure that you are still feeling good every day when you're getting up to go to work, when you're helping your kids, family and friends, knowing that you are living your purpose. Take some time and craft that statement. It's the value that you want to create, plus who you want to create it for to create that expected outcome from work, passion and purpose that you wake up to do each day.
